The Climate Governance Initiative and InfluenceMap have signed an agreement to collaborate to provide board directors with the knowledge and high-quality data needed to make boardroom decisions that drive ambitious action by companies to address the climate crisis.

A report by the Climate Governance Initiative based on a global study of board director views across 20 countries found that one of the main barriers to companies developing a robust and effective climate strategy was a lack of knowledge on climate change and sustainability. Board directors pointed to the importance of having high quality data to prioritise and take action on climate, with one director saying, “boards understand numbers and we often don’t have this to share.”

The partnership between InfluenceMap, an independent think tank that produces data-driven analysis on how business and finance are impacting the climate crisis through climate policy, and the Climate Governance Initiative, a global network reaching more than 100,000 board directors, will help to bridge this knowledge gap.

InfluenceMap’s data is used by corporations, investors, policymakers and the global media. It maintains LobbyMap, a database of corporate and industry association lobbying of climate policy around the world, and FinanceMap, a platform providing metrics and analysis of the asset management sector through a climate lens.

Alexandra Bolton OBE, Director of the Climate Governance Initiative, said:

“We are delighted to be partnering with InfluenceMap to create measurable impact on climate change by supporting board directors to build their knowledge and skills to take action on climate issues.

“This partnership will connect board directors in the Climate Governance Initiative’s network of 32 Chapters, operating across 73 countries, with high-quality data and research to enable their decision-making and strategy development, and will extend the reach of InfluenceMap’s innovative analysis globally.”

Dylan Tanner, Executive Director and Co-Founder of InfluenceMap, said:

“We are pleased to be partnering with the Climate Governance Initiative to support their important work in the climate governance space. Board level directors are critical for climate action. The scientific community has made clear that robust government policy intervention is essential for achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement, and it’s great to see the Initiative’s global community of directors take the risks and opportunities associated with this policy seriously.  The development of binding global frameworks for the decarbonization of industry and finance requires board level directors of companies to be active participants and to understand the power they wield to drive positive change. We are excited to share our insights into corporate climate policy advocacy and to help build positive alliances in this network.”

The partnership will deliver practical resources on climate governance tailored for board directors, including briefings on climate policy engagement in regions around the world and case studies specific to boards in particular industries and sectors.

The first briefing was published today, explaining how board directors in the road transport and automotive industries can support government policymaking. It is available on the Climate Governance Hub, a resource hub for board directors from the Climate Governance Initiative.

The two organisations have previously collaborated on a briefing for board directors on corporate climate policy engagement, which was published in 2023.
